Day 6 of #28LoveLettersToBlackWomen: Sheryl Lee Ralph

Writer's picture: Alli MyattAlli Myatt

This Black History Month, I’m sharing art, songs, movies, and other creative expressions from and about Black women that spark joy for me.  Because Black women are often not remembered for their contributions, I thought this would be one way to give flowers to those who inspire me.

For Day 6, I’m giving flowers to Sheryl Lee Ralph for her inspirational  2023 Ted Talk.

Sheryl opens her Ted Talk by singing, and I’m here for it.  She was the original Deena in the original Broadway staging of Dreamgirls, so she’s always been able to blow.  Ralph shares stories about people who tried to make her feel less than and what she did to keep her eyes on her prize.

Her Ted Talk focuses on how to find goodness in our world and in ourselves, something we definitely need to be able to do in 2025.  The three steps Sheryl outlines for believing in yourself are:

See yourself for the greatness of who and what you are.  Don’t believe the haters and bigots trying to cut you down.
Think about yourself and the abundance you deserve.
Believe in all that is possible for yourself - believe you belong.

Thank you, Sheryl Lee Ralph, for reminding us that we don’t have to believe the negative messages we receive about ourselves.  We can - and must - see and believe we are magnificent and worthy of abundance.
