Day 17 of #29LoveLettersToBlackWomen: Rihanna

Writer's picture: Alli MyattAlli Myatt

Today I'm going to pass flowers to the artist Rihanna.

Rihanna is one of the few musicians that owns her own masters, which means she is compensated whenever her music is played or remixed into new music. Most artist's masters are owned by record companies, so many artist only make money through performance. Rihanna insisted owning her masters when she switched record companies in 2014, and is one the reasons she's richest self-made women in the world. https://buff.ly/3T1VYsH

Rihanna has built a fashion and beauty empire that home to the the most successful celebrity makeup brand, Fenty. Throughout her career Rihanna has proven she knows how to bring home the coins. And in a world where Black women are chronically underpaid, I'm glad to see Rihanna finding a way to ensure she is paid what she is worth. https://buff.ly/3T2J65A

This #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm celebrating 29 Black women who have influenced me through the ways they pursue their own liberation. Black women's work is often unrecognized and not cited, and this month I'm determined to pass out a few flowers to Black women. #Day17 #29LoveLettersToBlackWomen #GiveBlackWomenTheirFlowers
